A. DVOŘÁK – Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, “From the New World”
Throughout the 19th century, music sought new ways to express stories, personal emotions and cultural identities. In Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, Strauss brings a folk hero’s adventures to life through the orchestra’s shifting colours. Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto creates a subtle dialogue between piano and orchestra, with its quiet, unaccompanied piano opening establishing an intimate, personal voice from the outset. Dvořák’s From the New World Symphony brings together his impressions of America and traces of Czech musical culture. The broad, lyrical melody of the slow movement, in particular, conveys both his curiosity about a new land and his longing for home. All three composers appeal to the listener’s imagination by giving their melodies distinctive characters. John Axelrod will conduct the orchestra, with Justus Eichhorn as the piano soloist in Beethoven’s concerto.
