L. v. BEETHOVEN – Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67
L. v. BEETHOVEN – Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92
At the transition from the Classical to the Romantic era, Beethoven transformed the symphony into a powerful medium for expressing human struggle, elation and change. His Fifth Symphony demonstrates how an iconic four-note idea can shape an entire musical structure. Its progression from the intense tension of the opening to a radiant finale can be heard as a journey from darkness into light. In the Seventh Symphony, rhythm defines the music’s movement and character. In the second movement, melodies accumulate over a steady, walking rhythm to form an increasingly expansive narrative, while the finale is driven by an energy that evokes dance. Both works reveal Beethoven’s ability to create a vast emotional world from the simplest musical ideas. Marking the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death, the Beethoven Hommage concert will feature Candida Thompson leading the orchestra as concertmaster.
