Bernstein’s Candide Overture captures the humour of the stage work adapted from Voltaire’s satirical novel through brisk rhythms and brilliant orchestral colours. Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F brings the rhythmic vitality of jazz and the melodies of the blues into the classical concerto form. In Ravel’s La Valse, the graceful turns of the Viennese waltz gradually intensify into a turbulent whirl. Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite brings a ballet world inspired by Russian fairy tales into the orchestra. Mysterious musical colours, powerful dance rhythms and a majestic finale vividly convey the story. All four composers reshape different traditions within the orchestra, creating connections between music and movement. Nil Venditti conducts, with young pianist Hayato Sumino appearing as soloist.
