PROGRAMME
L. v. BEETHOVEN – Egmont Overture, Op. 84
F. SAY – “Mother Earth” Piano Concerto, Op. 111
Freedom and nature have long been central themes in the arts, offering ways to explore humanity’s relationship with the world. In his Egmont Overture, inspired by Goethe’s play, Beethoven brings the struggle for freedom into the orchestra. The slow, dark opening gradually gathers momentum before reaching a radiant finale, expressing this idea through the music’s unfolding structure. Say’s piano concerto “Mother Earth” brings the tradition of music inspired by nature into dialogue with today’s environmental concerns. Across seven movements, earth, forest, sea and river emerge through contrasting musical colours, while the recurring main theme in the piano connects these landscapes. Although they belong to different eras, both composers approach music as a means of reflecting on humanity and the world we inhabit. Tianyi Lu conducts the orchestra, with Fazıl Say appearing as soloist in “Mother Earth”, his latest piano concerto.
