Encounters between cities and cultures expand music’s expressive possibilities. Say’s orchestral work;Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar) uses the colours of the orchestra to evoke the daily life and bustle of this iconic Istanbul landmark, one of the world’s largest and oldest covered markets. Mozart’s;Piano Concerto No. 21 combines the balanced structure of the Classical era with a lively dialogue between piano and orchestra. Say’s Mozart-inspired works, including;Alla Turca Jazz;and;Mozart & Mevlana, also create a direct connection between the two composers. His;Istanbul Symphony brings the ney, kanun and percussion together with the orchestra, creating a musical portrait of the city’s history, people and changing moods across seven movements. Howard Griffiths conducts the traditional Year-End Concert, with Fazıl Say on piano, Burcu Karadağ on ney, Hakan Güngör on kanun and Aykut Köselerli on percussion.
